Laptops are the UK’s favourite piece of technology passing the long time favourite – the TV. “Consumers in the UK now prefer laptops to television when ranking their “favourite piece of technology”, the first time TV has not held the lead in this area. Deloitte, the consultancy, polled 2,276 people, 28% of which gave laptops primary status, ahead of TV’s 22%. Desktop PCs hit 19%, beating the 10% logged by smartphones.”

Laptops might now be the favourite, but in other news TV ad spend has hit a new high! “Television advertising expenditure reached a record annual high in the UK during 2011, a report has revealed. Thinkbox, the trade body, said that revenues, including linear spot ads and sponsorship, climbed 2.2% last year to £4.4bn. Its report was based on data provided by broadcasters.” http://www.warc.com/Content

The IPA is a part of ConnectedUK, four events in London mid May-mid June, forging links between UK’s creative industries to demonstrate thought leadership – worth a look and attendance from the Department (I volunteer..)! “The venture has been organised by a unique partnership of professional bodies including UKIE (interactive entertainment), PACT (TV production), BIMA (interactive and digital media), and the IPA (advertising) and aims to forge commercial and creative links between the UK’s key creative industries, and demonstrate thought leadership to policy makers. It will bring together hundreds of producers, agencies and developers to hear the latest thinking and experiences from across the converged media landscape regarding content, audiences, platforms and investment, and to discuss the potential for future collaboration across these areas. Speakers will include representatives from the BBC, Zeebox, Google, ITV, Gamesbrief, MPG and many more.”

Amex is finding new ways to use Twitter to enable their customers to tap into special offers.. “U.S. cardmembers can now sync their card with Twitter accounts, allowing them to turn customized Twitter hashtags into couponless savings. Once they log on to Twitter via any devices, they will be able to tweet the special offer and instantly load the savings into their cards. After qualifying purchases at participating merchants, including Best Buy, McDonald’s, Whole Foods, Zappos, and more, the savings are automatically delivered via statement credit in just a few days.”

We have recently spent awhile looking into the DIY generation and ever growing Maker culture in association with our Saatchi Spirit of the Nation.. This is yet another great example of people wanting to be crafty and make things themselves! The Makers is a New York-based company that sends out materials and instructions to create four-to-six craft projects per month, so subscribers can be making interesting stuff every week!

Speaking of DIY.. Of course I have to give an example from Ikea – a new product launch in association with their campaign in Norway! “A new Ikea product called “BERÖRA” (which means “to touch”) was created; a sewing kit with a special conductive thread to sew into a glove or mitten, along with a needle and some familiar IKEA-style instructions. If you sew the thread into the index finger of your gloves, you can use your tablet or other touchsceen device without having to take them off. 12,000 sewing kits were made to promote the launch and they sold out in just two weeks.”

Yahoo is reaching out to small business entrepreneurs with a new website – “Yahoo has launched a new resource for small businesses and entrepreneurs this week in the form of an online advice portal, with personalized news, advice and tools. Yahoo! Small Business Advisor also launches with exclusive, personal small-business tips from world-renowned chef Ming Tsai, with additional posts from other celebrity entrepreneurs to follow.”

And just when Saatchis is about to move away.. Lady Gaga is rumoured to be moving into Fitzrovia!

Coca-Cola Argentina created a fun project seeded in local tradition for the international soccer competition Copa America, by combining the paper throwing that takes place at matches with fan messages posted on Twitter to boost encouragement for the Argentinean national team.”

Cartier’s beautiful “L’Odyssee de Cartier” film is out and being played on TV and cinema screens in the UK for the next few weeks..
